What the term means
Ibogaine is a naturally occurring indole alkaloid found in the root bark of Tabernanthe iboga, a shrub native to Central and West Africa. Its cultural context includes Bwiti spiritual ceremonies, and that history deserves care rather than simplification. The Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics overview of ibogaine describes both its origins and the questions that surround contemporary use.
At low doses, ibogaine may act as a stimulant. At higher doses, it can produce a prolonged oneirogenic, or “waking dream,” state that may last 24–36 hours or longer. In practice, ibogaine therapy generally refers to a therapeutic-dose session paired with pre-treatment screening, continuous monitoring, recovery time, and follow-up integration.
A powerful experience is not the same thing as an established treatment.
